NEWS ニュース 202509.12 Second Language Speech and Text Integration Mechanism (Poster Presentation at the international conference) Posted in Presentation In collaboration with Professor Mayumi Kajiura at Nagoya City University, we conducted an fMRI study to address the question: “How do second language learners integrate audio and text, and do they prioritize one modality depending on speech rate?” Our results revealed that multiple brain regions are involved in multimodal integration, and that learners flexibly adapt to both speech rate and text presentation rate, with the engaged regions changing depending on the processing speed of audio and text. These findings were presented under the title “Modality, Dominance and Integration in L2 Comprehension: An fMRI Study of Speech Rate” at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language (SNL), held at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, USA, September 12–14, 2025.
