[Trouble shooting] Power outage and fire

Return to Summary > Emergency Response
Emergency Magnetic Field Shutdown Button

The emergency magnetic field shutdown button should only be pressed if it is necessary to remove the magnetic field to save lives or allow emergency responders access.

Example: A person is trapped within the MRI magnetic field between large metal objects.

In Life-threatening Situations: Press the button without hesitation. It will initiate rapid demagnetization within 20 seconds.

Important Note: Restoring the magnetic field will involve time and financial costs once pressed. Use the MRI console PC to stop the session for temporary imaging stoppages.

For Non-urgent Situations: If immediate demagnetization is not required, contact Philips for support. However, due to the demagnetization and magnetization processes, this will also involve time and financial costs.

Power Outage or MRI Equipment Malfunction
  1. Ensure Subject Safety:

Even during a power outage, the MRI room remains under a strong magnetic field.
Do not bring in flashlights or mobile phones (use the operating room light to illuminate).
Manually pull out the bed and remove the subject from the MRI machine.
Note: The bed cannot be moved up or down during a power failure.
Minimum of two staff members must be present in the room during experiments.

  2. Communication:
Use the direct-dial phone button [1] to contact Philips Customer Support for remote assistance with the MRI situation.
Expect a waiting time of 30 seconds or more with no sound.

  3. If no issue is found, follow the power outage manual (attached) to restore power.

  4. Once resolved, share the status with the Head of the Brain MRI Center and the Management Committee.

Fire Emergency
  1. Ensure Subject Safety:
  2. Initial Firefighting: Use the fire extinguisher in the hallway (do not bring it into the MRI room).
  3. If the initial firefighting attempt fails, call the fire department (119).
  4. Notify the Ageing Research Office of the situation.
  5. During Firefighter Operations:Explain to the fire department that they should not enter the MRI room, which is under a strong magnetic field.

Caution: Firefighters' protective gear and equipment may attract to the MRI machine and could lead to secondary disasters.

  6. Post-Emergency Response
After resolving the emergency, ensure to share the situation with the Head of the Brain MRI Center and the Management Committee.
